Provided by AGPAccording to reports citing the US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM), 88 commercial vessels have been diverted and four others rendered inoperable to ensure compliance with what Washington describes as a blockade on shipping to and from Iranian ports.
CENTCOM said in a post on X that “CENTCOM forces have redirected 88 commercial vessels, and disabled 4 to ensure total compliance.”
The move comes amid continued regional instability following the outbreak of hostilities between the United States and Israel and Iran in late February, which triggered retaliatory strikes across the region and heightened tensions in key maritime routes.
A ceasefire reportedly took effect in early April following mediation efforts, but subsequent negotiations failed to produce a durable agreement. Reports indicate that the truce was later extended while restrictions on Iranian-linked maritime traffic through the strategic waterway remained in place.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global energy corridor, connecting Gulf oil and gas producers to international markets. Any disruption in the passage has historically raised concerns over global energy supply stability and price volatility, particularly given the region’s central role in global petroleum exports.
