Modi, Rubio Hold Talks on Expanding India-US Cooperation

(MENAFN) Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met in New Delhi on Saturday to discuss strengthening relations between the two countries across multiple areas, including security and strategic cooperation.

According to reports, Rubio arrived in India earlier in the day for a four-day visit focused on enhancing ties between Washington and New Delhi.

Modi described the meeting positively and said discussions covered continued progress in the broader strategic partnership between the two nations as well as international and regional security matters.

"We discussed sustained progress in the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and issues related to regional and global peace and security," Modi said through US social media company X.

He added that both countries would continue working “closely for the global good."

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, who participated in the talks, said the discussions focused on expanding cooperation in areas such as trade, security, and advanced technologies.

"…a productive discussion on ways to deepen U.S.-India cooperation across security, trade, and critical technologies - areas that strengthen both our nations and advance a free and open Indo-Pacific."

Gor also emphasized the importance of India in Washington’s foreign policy, stating: "India is a vital partner to the United States!"

According to reports, Rubio also conveyed an invitation from US President Donald Trump for Modi to visit the White House in the near future.

A statement released by Modi’s office said the US diplomat briefed the Indian leader on ongoing developments in bilateral cooperation, particularly in defense and strategic technology sectors.

The talks additionally included discussions regarding developments in the Middle East and other global issues, with Rubio reportedly sharing Washington’s perspective on regional affairs.

Earlier Saturday, Rubio visited the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata, the humanitarian organization established by Mother Teresa. He later wrote on social media that Mother Teresa left a “tremendous legacy of compassion and service.”
