Russia Voices Cautious Optimism Over Iran-Israel Ceasefire

(MENAFN) Russia expressed cautious optimism over the ceasefire agreement between Iran and Israel announced by US President Donald Trump but questioned its durability, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated on Tuesday.

Lavrov addressed the uncertainty surrounding the recent declarations from Washington, Jerusalem, and Tehran, emphasizing the difficulty in forming definitive judgments. “As for the announcements that have been coming out of Washington, Israel, and Tehran … it is very difficult for us to make any final conclusions and get a clear picture, because President Trump has announced that peace is forever and ever, there is an agreement,” he said during the 11th Primakov Readings International Forum in Moscow.

Highlighting reports suggesting that the United States persuaded Israel to accept the ceasefire while Qatar played a similar mediator role with Iran, Lavrov welcomed the agreement in principle. “But after its announcement, there were reports of an exchange of blows between Israel and Iran, so let us not make any hasty conclusions based on fragmentary information. But we are for peace,” he added.

The ceasefire was declared by Trump late Monday, stating that Israel and Iran had reached a “Complete” and “Total” halt to hostilities, effectively ending “The 12 DAY War.” The conflict ignited on June 13 with Israeli airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear and military sites, followed by Iran’s retaliatory missile attacks.

Earlier, the US had launched strikes against three major Iranian nuclear facilities on Sunday, provoking Tehran to respond by attacking a US airbase in Qatar the following night.

The truce took effect at 0400 GMT on Tuesday, with Trump urging both nations to honor the ceasefire.

However, tensions flared as Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz commanded the military to resume heavy strikes against Tehran, accusing Iran of breaching the truce. Iran rejected these accusations, pledging a firm response to any further assaults.
