UK Heatwave Triggers Thunderstorm Alert
This weather alert is set to be in effect from Saturday through Sunday, with meteorologists cautioning that the intense heat and humidity might bring about heavy rainfall, sudden flooding, large hailstones, and lightning strikes.
Friday is expected to deliver widespread hot conditions, with temperatures reaching 32°C (90°F) in some regions before the stormy weather arrives.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has prolonged an amber heat-health warning for England until Monday, highlighting the pressure extreme heat places on healthcare and social services, especially affecting elderly individuals and those with existing medical conditions.
While the hot spell is likely to continue through the weekend, cooler air masses are anticipated to move in from the west by Sunday, easing the temperatures.
“Our findings show that heat can result in serious health outcomes across the population,” stated Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at UKHSA. “It is therefore important to check on friends, family and neighbors who are more vulnerable and to take sensible precautions while enjoying the sun.”
Temperatures in the south and east are expected to moderate slightly, with a further decline forecast for Monday. Nevertheless, weather experts suggest the possibility of the heatwave returning later in the following week.
