Chinese PM to partake in ruling party anniversary celebrations

(MENAFN) Chinese Premier Li Qiang arrived in Pyongyang on Thursday to attend the 80th anniversary celebrations of North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK), according to reports. This marks the first visit to North Korea by a Chinese premier since 2009 and Li’s first trip to the North Korean capital since assuming office in 2023.

During his three-day visit, Li is expected to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and other senior officials. North Korea plans a major military parade on Friday night to commemorate the WPK’s anniversary, with Li’s trip concluding on Saturday.

The last high-profile visit by a Chinese leader to North Korea was President Xi Jinping in 2019. Li’s trip follows closely after Kim’s attendance at China’s Victory Day celebrations in Beijing, marking his first participation in a multilateral event since taking power in December 2011.

Several other foreign leaders are also attending the WPK anniversary events. Vietnam’s top leader, To Lam, who serves as general secretary of the country’s ruling Communist Party, arrived in Pyongyang on Thursday, becoming the first Vietnamese official to visit in 18 years. Laotian President Thongloun Sisoulith arrived earlier and held a bilateral meeting with Kim on Wednesday, where the two leaders pledged to strengthen traditional ties and cooperation.

Russia will be represented by Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of the nation’s Security Council and former president, who is attending the celebrations alongside leaders from other allied countries, including Iran.
