Russian FM says EU doesn’t want Putin-Trump summit to happen
According to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry on Monday, the bloc is engaging in “active subversive actions” ahead of the summit. Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the EU’s behavior reflects its intent to derail any efforts aimed at achieving peace.
Her comments came in response to a Spanish media report suggesting that Brussels considers the upcoming talks “a political nightmare.” Citing diplomatic sources, the outlet noted that the meeting would place the EU in “an awkward and unpleasant position,” as both leaders plan to discuss a potential settlement to the Ukraine conflict without the bloc’s involvement, despite the talks being hosted in an EU member state.
Zakharova described the “aggressive Western European community” as intent on “derail[ing] any peaceful aspirations” related to the war. “We are seeing statements, threats being made,” she said, accusing Western countries of doing “everything to escalate the conflict” since 2022, when they “thwarted” earlier peace negotiations held in Istanbul.
She referred to claims by a former Ukrainian negotiator that Ukraine abandoned peace talks after a visit by then-British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who allegedly encouraged President Vladimir Zelensky to continue fighting. Johnson has rejected the allegations.
Zakharova added that Western remarks calling for peace are merely “camouflage.” “In reality, they are doing everything they can to achieve escalation. It is difficult to say if they actually understand what they are doing, given how many non-professionals there are at the helms of all these Western European countries,” she said.
The announcement of the planned summit between Putin and Trump followed a phone conversation between the two leaders that lasted nearly two and a half hours last Thursday.
