German Minister Urges Schools to Teach Crisis, War Preparedness
Dobrindt, affiliated with the center-right CSU, told a news agency that he intends to bring up the proposal during next month’s gathering of interior ministers from Germany’s federal states.
"My proposal is that in one school year, students in upper grade levels spend two consecutive class periods discussing what threat scenarios might exist and how to prepare for them," Dobrindt explained.
He added that children often act as vital conduits of information within their families, and this educational approach could help increase awareness in households.
The minister’s comments come at a time of rising strain between European nations and Russia, as US President Donald Trump's recent attempts to broker a ceasefire between Kyiv and Moscow have faltered.
Dobrindt, known for his conservative stance, has accused Russia of engaging in a "hybrid war" against Germany and its European allies through tactics such as disinformation, influence operations, cyberattacks, and sabotage.
German political and military authorities have repeatedly emphasized that the nation must be "fit for war" by 2029, amid growing concerns about Russia’s military potential and strategic intentions.
Earlier this year, German Chief of Defense General Carsten Breuer warned that Russia could be capable of striking a NATO member within the next four to seven years.
