UN denounces new Israeli attacks on UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon
"I can tell you that we are very concerned about the incident that occurred on Sunday in which an Israeli drone dropped a grenade in the vicinity of a UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) patrol and subsequently an Israeli tank fired a shot at the peacekeepers in Kafr Kila in the UNIFIL area of operations," UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said at a press briefing.
He confirmed that no casualties were reported, stating that "no damage was caused to our peacekeepers and assets."
According to Dujarric, "This incident came after an earlier one in the same location, where an Israeli drone flew over a UNIFIL patrol in an aggressive manner," prompting peacekeepers to use defensive countermeasures to neutralize the drone. He stressed that "any actions that may endanger the safety and security of the peacekeepers are completely unacceptable and must cease immediately."
Reports from the UN peacekeeping mission indicated that both an Israeli drone and tank fire targeted a UNIFIL patrol near Kfar Kila, with a second drone later flying aggressively over the same area.
UNIFIL, established in 1978, was expanded following the 2006 conflict between Israel and Hezbollah under UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
Despite a ceasefire agreement that came into force in November 2024, Israel has continued airstrikes in Lebanon, asserting that its operations are aimed at Hezbollah infrastructure.
Under the terms of the truce, Israeli forces were expected to complete their withdrawal from southern Lebanon by January 2025. However, reports indicate that the pullout remains incomplete, with Israeli troops still stationed at five border outposts.
