Israeli attack murders four people in Lebanon despite truce

(MENAFN) An Israeli airstrike on southern Lebanon has left four people dead and three injured, in what Lebanese authorities described as another violation of the ceasefire agreement, according to a statement from Lebanon’s Health Ministry on Sunday.

Reports indicate that an Israeli drone struck a vehicle traveling along the Doha-Kafarman road in the Nabatieh district late Saturday. The vehicle was completely destroyed, killing all four occupants, while two people on a nearby motorcycle were also wounded. The blast shattered the windows of dozens of homes in the largely residential Doha area, according to local media.

The Israeli military acknowledged responsibility for the attack, claiming that it had targeted Hezbollah officers.

Tensions have sharply escalated along the Lebanese-Israeli border in recent weeks, as Israel continues to carry out airstrikes in southern Lebanon despite the ceasefire that has technically remained in effect since November 2024.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz took to X to accuse the Lebanese president of delaying efforts to disarm Hezbollah, calling it a key demand from Israel.

“Hezbollah is playing with fire,” he said, pledging that attacks would intensify if disarmament was not fully enforced.

Neither the Lebanese government nor Hezbollah immediately responded to Katz’s remarks.

Earlier, in August, Lebanon’s government had approved a plan to bring all weapons under state control, but Hezbollah rejected the initiative, insisting that it would not disarm until Israel withdrew from five occupied border outposts in the south.

Since the start of Israel’s campaign in October 2023, the conflict has escalated into a full-scale offensive by September 2024, leaving over 4,000 people dead and nearly 17,000 injured in Lebanon, according to official figures.
