UK Considers Troop Deployment to Ukraine
In a guest column published by the Sunday Telegraph, John Healey said he is prepared to authorize British troop involvement if it signals a negotiated peace and long-term security for Europe.
“There is no heavier burden on any defense secretary or any government than committing our armed forces on operations. I want to be the defense secretary who deploys British troops to Ukraine – because this will mean that this war is finally over," Healey wrote.
He continued: “It will mean we have negotiated peace in Ukraine. And a secure Europe needs a strong, sovereign Ukraine.”
The war is set to reach its fourth anniversary this week, intensifying diplomatic discussions across Europe over post-conflict security arrangements.
The United Kingdom, alongside France, Germany and eight other European nations, has been in talks over establishing a “coalition of the willing,” potentially backed by the United States. The proposed alliance would aim to reinforce Ukraine’s security architecture in the event of a peace settlement.
According to Healey, such a coalition could “assist in the regeneration of Ukraine’s forces, in securing Ukraine’s skies, and in supporting safer seas, including through operating inside Ukraine,” underscoring a broad operational mandate.
British officials say work is underway with allied governments to formalize the coalition’s framework. The initiative is designed to deter future "Russian aggression" once any agreement is struck between Moscow and Kyiv.
The concept builds on signals from European leaders in December, when they indicated readiness to lead a “multinational force” in Ukraine under a U.S.-proposed peace framework.
While no deployment decision has been finalized, Healey’s remarks mark one of the clearest indications yet that London is prepared to play a direct role in enforcing a postwar settlement — a move that could significantly reshape Europe’s security landscape.
