India Arrests Foreign Nationals Over Claimed Terror Ties
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken the individuals into custody for questioning, with a Delhi court ordering their detention until March 27, according to media reports. The NIA is investigating their alleged illegal entry into India and suspected involvement in terrorist activities in the country’s north-eastern region. Three of the Ukrainian nationals were arrested in Delhi, while the others were apprehended in Lucknow. The American citizen was arrested in Kolkata.
Authorities suspect that the foreign nationals first entered Mizoram in north-east India before crossing into Myanmar, where they allegedly made contact with ethnic insurgent groups linked to violence in India. The group is also accused of importing a large shipment of drones from Europe, according to the reports.
The federal government announced in 2024 that it was drafting a national counter-terrorism policy and strategy to address the broader terrorist ecosystem. Following a terror attack in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir in April of last year, the NIA consulted with anti-terrorism units from all states to outline measures aimed at preventing similar attacks.
According to a policy document from the Indian Home Ministry, terrorist cells operating from abroad exploit the infrastructure, logistics, and local knowledge of domestic groups to carry out their activities.
