El Chapo Requests Transfer Back to Mexico as US Court Rejects Appeal

(MENAFN) According to reports, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, the former leader of Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel, has formally requested to be transferred from the United States back to Mexico.

The request was submitted in a letter to a US federal court and later made public. In it, Guzmán argues that he has been subjected to harsh conditions during his imprisonment and claims there were legal irregularities in his case. He also asserts that certain key elements of evidence were not properly established during his trial.

In his letter, he wrote:

“I have written several letters regarding the fairness and validity of my appeal request for my next hearing in order to obtain fair treatment under the law. This is a respectful request concerning the Court’s violation regarding the ‘compelling evidence’ that was not proven, which prevented the dismissal of my case. I ask the District Court for my right to be transferred back to my country and to face charges related to the violation of my verdict in the interest of fairness under federal law,”

The request was reviewed and ultimately rejected by the presiding judge, who ruled that the claims lacked legal basis and did not justify any form of relief.

According to court findings, Guzmán has submitted multiple previous requests to the court, including appeals for release, retrial, access to trial documents, and challenges to his conviction. All of these have been denied.

Guzmán is widely known as a former major figure in organized crime in Mexico. His criminal career included multiple arrests and escapes before he was finally recaptured in 2016 and later extradited to the United States in 2017, where he is currently serving a life sentence in a high-security prison.

Overall, the latest filing reflects continued legal attempts by the incarcerated cartel figure to challenge aspects of his conviction, despite repeated court rejections.
