Zelensky Declares Russia Truce Starting May 6 Ahead of Commemoration

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Monday that a ceasefire with Russia will begin at 00:00 on the night of May 5–6, stressing that “human life is far more valuable than any anniversary celebration.”

He stated that Ukraine did not receive any official request regarding the “cessation of hostilities” earlier announced by Moscow in connection with Russia’s Victory Day commemorations.

“In the time left until that moment, it is realistic to ensure that silence takes effect,” he said in a post on US social media platform X.

While the post did not clearly specify the duration of the ceasefire, a news agency reported that it is set to begin on May 6.

Zelenskyy also said Ukraine would mirror any truce once it comes into force.

“It is time for Russian leaders to take real steps to end their war, especially since Russia’s Defense Ministry believes it cannot hold a parade in Moscow without Ukraine’s goodwill,” Zelenskyy said.

Earlier on Monday, Russia’s Defense Ministry announced its own temporary ceasefire with Ukraine scheduled for May 8–9, describing it as being in honor of the Soviet Union’s Victory Day celebrations marking the end of the “Great Patriotic War.”
