Syria, Jordan, Lebanon Eye Broader Regional Energy Integration

(MENAFN) Syria's interim authorities announced Monday that collaborative restoration efforts have successfully repaired key sections of the Arab Gas Pipeline, with gas flows through Jordan having "significantly stabilized" the country's national electricity grid — marking a significant step forward in regional energy cooperation.

Mohammed al-Bashir, head of Syria's energy authority, disclosed that several interconnection lines between Syria and Lebanon are now primed for activation, signaling tangible progress in the drive to rebuild the region's battered energy infrastructure.

The announcements were made during a trilateral ministerial meeting held in Amman, where senior energy officials from Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon declared they had reached an "advanced stage" in plans to broaden natural gas and electricity cooperation across the three nations.

Jordanian Energy Minister Saleh Al-Kharabsheh confirmed that technical teams had completed assessments to upgrade regional energy networks. Under the current operational arrangement, natural gas is imported from international markets, regasified on Jordanian soil, and subsequently piped into Syria. Al-Kharabsheh added that efforts are now concentrated on finalizing comparable contractual and technical frameworks with Lebanon, emphasizing that completing repairs to gas infrastructure remains a prerequisite for achieving full electricity interconnection.

Lebanese Energy Minister Joe Saddi struck an optimistic tone, characterizing the trilateral cooperation as a "strategic choice" oriented toward rebuilding Lebanon's energy sector on more sustainable and cost-effective foundations. The country has endured years of chronic power outages and a severely deteriorating energy infrastructure that has crippled daily life for millions.

The three ministers closed the Amman meeting by reaffirming their collective commitment to sustained technical coordination, framing the initiative as a cornerstone for wider regional energy integration in the years ahead.
